Sergei Bobrovsky, 37, has an uncertain future with the Florida Panthers, and NHL insider Frank Seravalli name-dropped Jordan Binnington as his replacement.

NHL Rumour Report on X alluded to Seravalli’s recent take on the Bobrovsky situation while speaking on the podcast show Frankly Hockey.

“Frank Seravalli: Re Panthers goaltending: If it's not [Sergei Bobrovsky], then who?; to me the big guy that stands out is Jordan Binnington - Frankly Hockey (6/23),” read their X post.

Notably, the Russian goaltender was on a seven-year, $70 million contract signed in July 2019 with the Panthers. The deal with a $10 million average annual value (AAV) ran out at the completion of the last season.

Since then, the Panthers and Bobrovsky haven’t been able to agree to a new deal, with unrestricted free agency not far away on July 1 of this year.

As per a report published in Sportsnet, Bobrovsky is looking to sign a new deal worth $42 million for a period of six or seven years, but the Panthers haven’t made the call on it. He is set to turn 38 years of age on September 20 of this year, which might be a major stumbling block in this regard.

The market for players of Bobrovsky’s age is there, but it isn’t quite as welcoming to give long-term contracts for such a huge amount of money. If the Panthers were to accept Bobrovsky’s demands, he would be nearing 45 years of age after the completion of the 2032-33 season in the NHL.

With that, it will be quite interesting to see whether Bobrovsky indeed stays at the Panthers or they indeed try to replace him with the 32-year-old Binnington.

The Canadian goaltender has been an exceptional performer for most of his time with the St. Louis Blues.

Jordan Binnington’s NHL career with the St. Louis Blues

Jordan Binnington made it to the NHL in 2011 when the St. Louis Blues selected him as the third-round pick in the draft, while he was goaltending for Owen Sound in the OHL. He got the chance to make his NHL debut on January 14, 2016, against the Carolina Hurricanes after competing for the Chicago Wolves in the AHL.

Binnington was sent back to the Wolves in the AHL before playing the 2017-18 season at the Providence Bruins in the same competition. He had to wait for the 2018-19 season to get proper game time in the NHL with the Blues before becoming a regular feature on the roster.

The Canadian did play a handful of games in the 2018-19 season with the San Antonio Rampage in the AHL. He also went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Blues in his first full season with the Blues.

In the 2025-26 season, Binnington wasn’t quite at his best in 41 appearances for St. Louis with a 13-20-7 record. He managed a save percentage of .873 and a 3.33 goals-against average with just one shutout.

He is currently on a six-year, $36 million contract, set to expire at the end of next season, which will prompt the Blues to look at his future with the franchise. They might be interested in trading him if the Panthers came calling for him to replace Sergei Bobrovsky at the Florida Panthers.

In his nine seasons for the Blues, Binnington has played 377 games for a 186-136-43 record. He has a save percentage of .903 with a 2.86 goals-against average and 19 shutouts in the NHL.
