Nico Hischier's future with the New Jersey Devils is becoming an important topic as contract talks begin behind the scenes. According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, early talks between the Devils and Hischier’s agent look positive, and both parties want to continue the partnership after his current deal.

LeBrun also said that Hischier’s agent, Allain Roy, and Devils GM Sunny Mehta have had good conversations. Around the league, the belief is that New Jersey wants to sign its captain long-term instead of letting him reach free agency in 2027.

“All things being equal, it would appear an extension is the most likely outcome, but things are at an early and delicate stage,” LeBrun said, as reported by NHL Rumour Report. 

Nico Hischier is approaching the final year of his seven-year contract, which he signed on October 18, 2019, with the New Jersey Devils. The deal is worth $7.25 million per year and runs until the end of the 2026-27 season.

In the 2025-26 season, the 27-year-old center scored 28 goals and 66 points in 82 games. He continued to lead New Jersey’s top line. He also stayed strong in faceoffs and became the only NHL player to win over 1,000 faceoffs in one regular season.

While contract talks are still early, the money involved is expected to be big. According to AFP Analytics, Nico Hischier could earn over $11 million per year on a long-term extension.

The deal could even reach about $11.459 million per year, depending on the contract length and structure.

What an Extension Means for the Devils’ Core Future

Beyond the contract, this deal is crucial for the New Jersey Devils' long-term future. Pierre LeBrun noted that the team must balance paying Nico Hischier fairly while still keeping cap space to build a strong contender.

Hischier will also look at how competitive the team is becoming. His decision will likely hinge on the team's ability to transition from playoff hopefuls to perennial contenders. Both sides must align on winning and team direction in these talks.

Nico Hischier brings value to the New Jersey Devils beyond just scoring. Since the early 2020s, he has nearly produced at a point-per-game level while also playing strong defense, winning faceoffs, and leading as captain. He is a key part of the team with Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt.

The rising salary cap gives New Jersey more financial space, but upcoming free agents will also affect how they plan the roster and their contracts.

While no deal is imminent, the mutual interest suggests a long-term agreement is the priority for the New Jersey front office.
