The Carolina Hurricanes just let a two-goal lead vanish in Game 1 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. Despite a fast start from Hurricanes' winger Nikolaj Ehlers on June 2, 2026, the team now faces an uphill battle. Ehlers is now calling out the mistakes that cost them the series opener.

After scoring his first goal in just 25 seconds of Game 1, the Dane spoke to the media in the postgame interview. The Hurricanes team reporter, Walt Ruff, shared excerpts of it on his X account on June 3, 2026.

“Nikolaj Ehlers said the #Canes “made too many mistakes” in the Game 1 defeat. It's a good team we're playing against. As you saw tonight, [if] they get their chances, they score on them."

He was alluding to the forechecking pressure from the Golden Knights. This forced a defensive structure collapse for Carolina, leading to conceded goals after going 2-0 up early.

“Yeah, I mean, you don't know exactly what to expect, it's the first game, the building was already buzzing,” Ehlers said in between periods during Game 1, per the NHL website.

Ehlers was still quite positive about Carolina's chances in the Stanley Cup Final Playoff Series.

During the first period of Game 1, Ehlers scored early, beating Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart with a shot from around the left face-off circle. It has gone in the history books as the third fastest opening goal in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

His second goal of the night came with 7:52 left on the clock in the first period on a breakaway, which was put together by Jalen Chatfield to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.

But the Knights found a way to come back.

After being down two goals, the Knights' head coach, John Tortorella, had a chat with his team. It clearly worked, as Vegas scored twice in rapid succession to take a 3-2 lead.

Shea Theodore scored first, with 6:32 remaining in the first period. A pass from Brayden McNabb and a deflection off the Canes' winger, Eric Robinson, put the puck into the back of the net.

30 seconds into the second period, Ivan Barbashev made it 2-2 after he converted Jack Eichel’s pass.

With 15:25 left on the clock, William Karlsson gave Vegas a 3-2 lead when he scored from the slot after getting a backhand pass from Mitch Marner.

Following that, the Canes captain, Jordan Staal, made it 3-3 late in the second period before Brett Howden put Vegas back in the lead at the start of the third period.

Hurricanes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere leveled it up at 4-4 for Carolina at 11:19 before, the Knights' Tomas Hertl scored the game-winning goal for 5-4 with just 3:24 left on the clock.
