The Edmonton Oilers could make a major roster change this offseason and ship off a franchise cornerstone.
According to TSN's Elliotte Friedman and Edmonton Journal's Mark Spector, veteran defenseman Darnell Nurse wants a fresh start and is open to working with management on a trade.
Reportedly, the 31-year-old has already handed the Oilers a list of three to five teams he would accept a trade to. The names, however, are yet to be revealed.
This is a big development as Nurse has a no-movement clause until July 1, 2027, which gives him full control over his next destination.
Selected seventh overall in the 2013 NHL draft, Nurse has played his entire career with the Edmonton Oilers. He ranks seventh in team history for games played, with 798 regular-season games and 100 playoff games.
He has been one of the team's longest-serving players and serves as its alternate captain.
The trade request comes amid a busy offseason for the Oilers, who are undergoing major changes following the hiring of Mike Babcock as head coach.
As management looks to reshape the roster and free up salary-cap space, trading Nurse could become one of the biggest stories of the summer.
However, teams may think twice about absorbing his current deal.
Nurse's $74M Deal Makes a Trade Harder Than It Looks
Although Nurse is willing to waive his no-movement clause, his contract may become a hurdle. In 2021, he signed an eight-year, $74 million deal with the Oilers, which carries a $9.25 million cap hit.
His contract runs through the 2029-30 season, leaving about $37 million still owed unless Edmonton keeps part of the salary.
Nurse remains a solid top-four defenseman. In the 2025-26 season, he played all 82 games and recorded 24 points, scoring seven goals and adding 17 assists. He also continued to play important minutes in all situations.
Teams looking for an experienced and reliable defenseman could see Nurse as a strong option. Among possible destinations, the San Jose Sharks, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Detroit Red Wings could use his experience and proven durability.
However, his salary, contract length, and reported list of preferred destinations could complicate the process.
Where Nurse ends up will have a big effect on both the Edmonton Oilers’ plans and the league’s trade market.
