Oilers fans hopeful as Edmonton signs promising goaltender Connor Ungar to one-year deal: “Best goalie nobody is talking about”

The Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of goaltender Connor Ungar on Thursday, June 18, and fans were pleased about the decision on social media. Regarded as a promising goaltender, the 24-year-old has inked a one-year, two-way deal with an $850,000 Average Annual Value.

The Calgary, Alberta, native joined the Oilers as a free agent on March 18, 2024, from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. He spent the 2024-25 season in the East Coast Hockey League with the Fort Wayne Komets, registering a 19-12-1 record in 35 games for (2.74 GAA / .903 SV%).

Ungar played for four different teams in the 2025-26 season, including three in the ECHL and one in the AHL. With the Oilers ranking 7th in Goals Against at 269, Ungar could bolster Edmonton's goaltending depth heading into 2026-27.

As per the press release published on the NHL website, Ungar began his season with the Greensboro Gargoyles in the ECHL for the 2025-26 season. Ungar appeared in four games for Greensboro with a 2-1-1 record alongside (1.42 GAA / .945 SV%).

His return to Fort Wayne in the 2025-26 season lasted for just two games, winning both (1.44 GAA / .944 SV%). After becoming a part of the Orlando Solar Bears last December, he debuted with a shutout, including 37 saves.

Following a few performances for them, Ungar got called up by the Bakersfield Condors, the AHL affiliate of the Oilers, in mid-December.

For the Condors, Ungar ended up playing 13 games. He won the first six games for them, including his first shutout, which had 25 saves in total.

Connor Ingram is the current starting goalie for the Oilers, and Ungar's presence will provide depth to the roster.

With an impressive resume so far, it is no surprise that Oilers fans are celebrating his signing.

Edmonton Oilers Fans Cheer for Connor Ungar Signing

Oilers fans have been quite impressed with his credentials. They posted many comments on the Oilers’ X post, discussing what Ungar might bring to the table as a goaltender in the 2026-27 NHL season.

“Outstanding! Only 13 games with Bakersfield but very good numbers. Played for one season in the OUA with Brock University('23-'24)..excellent numbers! Not a big goalie at 6' tall, but gotta especially support guys who've played in the Cdn University hockey system! Good wishes,” an Oilers fan wrote a lengthy post about Ungar.

“Brilliant! The guy played incredible everywhere last season. Looking forward to seeing more Ungar this season!” another Oilers fan said, alluding to his performances last season.

An Oilers supporter went all-in on Ungar’s hiring by Edmonton, calling it a victory already.

“NO F****** WAY RARE OILERS W,” the supporter wrote.

A few of Oilers fans were looking forward to watching him play for the franchise in the NHL in the coming seasons.

“Hopefully he gets some NHL games soon, he’s the best goalie nobody is talking about,” an Oilers fan said.

“This is a smart choice from the team, happy to see it,” another fan remarked.
