Oilers fans question front office after Frederik Andersen lands one-year contract: “Are they stupid?”

The Edmonton Oilers have found their next goaltender, but not everyone is satisfied with their pick.

Stanley Cup champion Frederik Andersen had agreed to a one-year contract with Edmonton. It was first reported by ESPN analyst Kevin Weekes on July 1 and later confirmed by BR Open Ice on Wednesday evening.

"Breaking news, breaking news, let's go," said the analyst.

Andersen's new deal starts with a base salary of $1 million, with performance bonuses that could go up to $2.8 million depending on games played and playoff wins.

It is a low risk for the team as it has spent years searching for stability for a while now.

According to Matt Larkin, in the Daily Faceoff's rankings, Andersen stands as No. 16 among the top unrestricted free agents. He just finished his five-year run with the Carolina Hurricanes, fresh with a Stanley Cup win.

Andersen boasts a resume that sets him apart from most available goaltenders. His .913 save percentage speaks for itself. However, his durability remains a roadblock.

In each of the last four seasons, he has played around 35 games or fewer after missing extended time due to injuries, including a blood-clotting issue while with the Hurricanes.

Edmonton appears to have good confidence that Andersen can stay healthy enough to get them back in their crease. But the fans are not sold on this addition.

Fans react to signing Frederik Andersen

Given the uncertainty around Andersen's health, the Oilers' fan base did not react well once the news broke on the X post by @BR_OpenIce. They flooded the comments with their concerns.

Most of the reactions show widespread frustration among the fans, with them calling out the team for making the wrong choice. "Are they stupid?" one fan wrote.

"Why, Oilers, why? Another gamble? A 55-year-old, injury-prone goalie is supposed to bring you the Cup? 😩😩" one fan wrote, talking about their concern over Andersen's age and his injury setbacks in the recent past.

Last season, he suffered a concussion, and in the 2024-2025 season, he missed substantial time due to a knee injury that required surgery.

Others argued that Edmonton keeps acquiring older players instead of getting younger ones. "The Oilers just keep filling their roster with aging garbage. You love to see it," is one of the comments.

At 32 years old, Mattias Ekholm was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers in a trade with the Nashville Predators.

"Sorry, McDavid,” fans’ concern was mainly around Connor McDavid losing out on his shot at the title because of these older players.

There were a few fans who were focused less on Andersen and more on Edmonton's issues with its goaltenders,

"Oilers have had a problem with goaltenders giving up rebounds and dmen not clearing the puck and unfortunately have gone and snagged a goaltender that... gives up a lot of rebound attempts.”

Despite this criticism, the Andersen signing will only be justified when he’s on the ice.
