After a relatively tough 2025-26 season, Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch got fired from his role on May 14. And the Oilers' general manager, Stan Bowman, recently came clean about the vision that led to this unexpected move.

Bowman spoke to the media about the decision to dismiss Knoblauch shortly after terminating him and addressed the questions around the time they took to arrive at this conclusion. Knoblauch’s last act for the Oilers was a loss in Game 6 of the second round of the playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks, which eliminated them from the Stanley Cup race.

In the press conference, Sportsnet’s journalist Mark Spector asked Bowman about the criticism related to firing Knoblauch. In response, the 52-year-old said that the authorities had analysed multiple aspects for a long time before arriving at this conclusion. He said, “I think I can say we didn't rush through this. We did the analysis, and as I said at the outset, Kris is a tremendous guy.” 

Bowman added, “I have a lot of respect for him as a person and as a coach, but we didn't make our decision until very recently.” He also called the situation “unfortunate” and didn’t intend to disrespect Knoblauch.

The Oilers GM also stated that he didn’t want to deliver Knoblauch his fate on the phone but rather in-person. That’s why it took time to arrange the logistics for the meeting, which happened the night before the official announcement was made.

Moreover, the earlier part of the aforementioned question from Spector to Bowman was related to his attempt to arrange talks with Stanley Cup-winning head coach Bruce Cassidy while Knoblauch was in charge. 

However, the Oilers' GM didn't have any of it and said, “I'm not going to comment on media reports about other candidates. It’s not appropriate to be doing that.”

But while Bowman addressed the Oilers' well-thought-out approach behind firing Knoblauch, let's take a look at his record with the Oilers to determine whether his firing was justified.

Kris Knoblauch’s record with the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL

Kris Knoblauch joined the Edmonton Oilers in November 2023 in place of Jay Woodcroft, inheriting a 3-9-1 start from him before delivering a very impressive 46-18-5 regular season numbers.

It helped the Oilers get up to 109 points in 82 games for second place in the Pacific Division before reaching the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, which they lost to the Florida Panthers.

The numbers were almost identical for the 2024-25 campaign under Knoblauch, finishing the regular season with a 48-29-5 record for 101 points to finish in third place in the division. The journey led the Oilers to yet another Stanley Cup Final, and this time, the Panthers became a massive stumbling block once more.

In the 2025-26 season, Knoblauch took Edmonton to second place in the division despite accumulating just 91 points for a 41-30-11 record before the Anaheim Ducks eliminated them from the playoffs.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs record of 31-22 for Knoblauch during his time at the Oilers was quite an impressive one.
