The future of captain and top-line center Connor McDavid at the Edmonton Oilers has been a constant topic of discussion for the last few weeks. In a recent update, Oilers Now host and radio analyst Bob Stauffer expects him to stay with the franchise.

While speaking on Sportsnet 590 The FAN per a clip on X from Tuesday, June 9, Stauffer stated that McDavid is committed to the Oilers. He thinks that McDavid will sign a seven-year contract with the Oilers sooner rather than later, due to his involvement beyond just playing for them.

“I don't think there's anybody more committed to Edmonton than Conor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. I expect the next contract that Conor McDavid signs to be a seven-year extension."

McDavid's eight-year $100 million contract ended in 2025, and he has signed a two-year, $25 million extension, which kicks in next season. Stauffer believes that the very next contract McDavid signs with the Oilers will be a max-term deal, showing his commitment.

Stauffer alluded to the trend of player involvement in key decisions in other sports to drive home his point. McDavid was part of the decision-making process to bring in Mike Babcock as the replacement coach.

Moreover, the Oilers Now host gave his take on Babcock’s potential hiring as the new head coach of the team.

“From ownership to the management to the players, everybody is a 100 per cent on board with Mike Babcock, you probably know the level of engagement," he added.

Babcock is facing an investigation by the NHLPA into his conduct as head coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023, as he was accused of invading his players' privacy.

Regardless of his decisions off the ice, McDavid has been stellar for the Oilers this season.

Connor McDavid Wins the Ted Lindsay Award for the Most Outstanding Player

On Sunday, June 7, Connor McDavid won the Ted Lindsay Award for becoming the most outstanding player in the NHL, as per the votes from the NHLPA members.

He earned the prestigious award for the fifth time, joining the legendary Wayne Gretzky on top of the illustrious list.

The 2025-26 season saw McDavid score his second-highest points ever, at 138 (153 in 2022-23). He bagged 48 goals along with 90 assists for the Oilers.

The family and friends of McDavid surprised him with the award at the Magna Golf Club in Aurora, Ontario. He was appreciative of his opponents for naming him as the winner once more.

“This award, coming from the guys that you play against every single night and battle against every single night, to have them recognize me with an award like this, means so much,” the 29-year-old said.

While McDavid is set to enter his new contract, nothing is confirmed about his future beyond 2028.
