The Ottawa Senators made their first big move of the offseason by trading captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. In return, Ottawa received three first-round draft picks and one second-round pick.

The Senators received the ninth overall pick and the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, Florida’s second-round pick in 2027, and a conditional first-round pick in 2029, as part of the trade.

The deal gives Ottawa valuable draft assets and more salary-cap space as the team focuses on building for the future.

“This was not a decision we took lightly, but ultimately we did what we felt was best for the long-term future of our hockey club,” Senators president Steve Staios said as reported by NHL.com. “We now possess cap space and draft capital and will be actively working to improve our roster.”

Trading Brady Tkachuk is a huge decision for the Ottawa Senators because he was one of the most important players in the franchise.

Ottawa selected him fourth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, and he spent his entire NHL career with the team. In 572 regular-season games, he scored 213 goals and added 250 assists for 463 points. He also brought a physical style of play, collecting 821 penalty minutes.

The 26-year-old forward helped Ottawa return to the playoffs and played in all 10 postseason games over the last two seasons. Even so, the Senators believed the chance to receive several high draft picks was too good to pass up.

With two first-round picks in the top 25 of the 2026 draft and another possible first-round pick in 2029, Ottawa now has many options to improve and reshape its roster.

Florida Lands Another Franchise-Changing Star

While the Ottawa Senators focus on the future, the Florida Panthers continue to add top talent to chase another championship. General manager Bill Zito is known for making bold moves, and trading for Brady Tkachuk may be his biggest move yet.

As per another report by NHL.com, the trade reunites Brady with his older brother, Matthew Tkachuk, creating one of the NHL’s most exciting stories. Florida gave up a lot to get him, but the team believes his scoring, physical play, leadership, and playoff style make him worth it.

Brady brings 463 career points and makes an already strong Panthers lineup even better. Florida also added him without trading away any of its top scorers from last season.

Beyond helping on the ice, the Tkachuk brothers are expected to become an important part of the Florida Panthers brand.

Their popularity with hockey fans, especially after international tournaments and public appearances together, gives Florida another way to attract attention in the competitive South Florida sports market.

For the Ottawa Senators, the focus now shifts to the draft picks they received. Whether they use those picks in the draft or trade them for other players, Ottawa has gained valuable assets that could help shape the team’s future for many years.
