Ottawa Senators GM Calls Brady Tkachuk Exit Talk ‘Nonsense’

Senators GM Steve Staios is shutting down trade talk surrounding Brady Tkachuk. Following a disappointing first-round sweep, Staios labeled rumors of the captain's departure as pure nonsense. The franchise remains committed to its leader despite a winless postseason.

The Ottawa Senators were swept 4–0 by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs. After that, the trade rumours about Brady Tkachuk started to spread. However, general manager Steve Staios rejected those rumors and clearly said that nothing like that is happening.

“It's nonsense is what it is,” Staios said. “I don’t read it. I don’t bother with it. We know what we have internally. We have great communication with our players, so we really don’t focus on it.

The GM denied rumours, stating the team never discussed trading captain Brady Tkachuk.

"I mean, this comes up very often. There's nothing that we have talked about or thought about where that conversation should happen.”

Steve Staios also praised captain Brady Tkachuk for handling injuries, Olympic duties, and a demanding schedule while continuing to lead and perform consistently.

“I think he dealt with a lot,” Staios said. “I think we have to really put this into perspective here. I mean, he came out of the gate, he dealt with an injury to start the season, goes off to the Olympics, wins a gold medal. In a condensed schedule, regular-season schedule -- there was a lot this year. And there’s a lot on him, and he continued to play.”

Brady Tkachuk could not speak during Monday’s exit interviews. His wife, Emma Tkachuk, had just given birth to their second child.

Senators Players Back Staios’ Comments, Showing Support for Captain Tkachuk

Apart from the GM Steve Staios, the Senators’ teammate Tim Stutzle also backed Tkachuk and his future with the franchise.

“He became a captain very young, and I think that's hard for anyone, becoming captain in a Canadian market,” Stutzle said.  “And I feel like he puts a lot of pressure on himself, as we all do. And I feel like I can relate with him in a lot of ways, in that way, and that he wants to win too. He cares.”

When a team performs poorly, people naturally question the captain or star players. In the NHL, rumours like this are very common. However, the management of the Ottawa Senators made it clear that they see Brady Tkachuk as a long-term leader.

Brady signed his contract with Ottawa in 2021, and it still has two years left. The management wants stability right now, not major changes.

This season, Brady recorded 59 points in 60 regular-season games. However, he failed to score any points in the playoffs, and the Senators were eliminated after a 4–2 loss in Game 4.

While the team will continue to assess its performance and make adjustments where necessary, the captain, Brady Tkachuk, remains firmly in the organization’s plans as it works toward becoming a consistent playoff contender once again.
