Rangers Re-Sign Braden Schneider Ahead of Arbitration Hearing

The New York Rangers blueline looks a bit more fortified as they re-signed defenseman Braden Schneider just ahead of the arbitration hearing set for July 29.

“Schneider, 24, will make $5.5 million next season, an NHL source told ESPN on Monday,” wrote ESPN Journalist Greg Wyshynski, in an article published on July 14, 2026. “The defenseman is coming off a two-year deal with a $2.2 million cap hit.”

Schneider was one of the 15 RFAs who filed for the hearing this year, likely because neither he nor his team could reach a middle ground in salary talks. However, he avoided arbitration and offer-sheet risks by accepting a raise, a win for both sides.

He had an 18-point season with a career-high 20:27 per game, per the same ESPN segment, but struggled in a bigger role when pushed into a top-pair duty for 27 games due to defenseman Adam Fox’s injury absence.

According to Forever Blueshirts journalist John Kreiser, the team has also added former Vancouver Canucks shutdown defender Marcus Pettersson and former Utah Mammoth offensive defenseman Sean Durzi to upscale the second pair. This will lighten Schneider's defensive burden.

But with this raise, the Rangers will surely expect better from their 19th overall draft pick in 2020, especially GM Chris Drury, given his high praise for the blueliner.

GM Backs Young Defenseman Despite Rough Season

Surely Schneider’s offseason will be spent upgrading his skills and helping the team win with the additional help from Pettersson and Durzi. The positive remarks from the Rangers’ GM and president, Chris Drury, will be a confidence boost.

"We think Braden is a really good, young, talented defenseman,” Drury said on July 2, per NY Rangers beat reporter Vince Z. Mercogliano. “Obviously, we drafted him, developed him, we like the skill set and what he does for us.”

“I know he, along with me and us, are just trying to do everything we can to be better and help him be better," he added further. "But he's an exciting player, and a terrific all-around high-character person."

Now, how much Schneider succeeds in honouring the raise and GM’s remarks will be the must-watch of the 2026-27 season.
