The unexpected firing of the Edmonton Oilers coach, Kris Knoublauch, raised a lot of eyebrows. And recently, an NHL insider disclosed that the internal dissatisfaction regarding Knoblauch's conduct ultimately led to his departure.

According to the NHL insider, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Edmonton Oilers top management and owners were really unhappy because the team could not turn their strong regular-season performances into a championship win. The owner of the team, Daryl Katz, took the final decision to fire Kris Knoblauch.

Friedman said, “I think Daryl Katz is really unhappy. I think he’s angry at the result this year. I think he’s angry at the way they played this year. And I think he made his displeasure clear.”

The insider also suggested that Daryl Katz strongly influenced decisions. He clearly pushed for major organizational changes after expressing dissatisfaction with the team’s results.

“I think he was a driving force. I don’t think you can underestimate the role he played in making his feelings clear that significant change needs to happen,” said Friedman.

In his opinion, the Oilers are looking for a stricter, more demanding grinder-type coach. They need someone who closely manages players and enforces higher accountability standards.

Kris Knoblauch became the head coach of the Oilers in November 2023. Under him, the team reached the finals of the Stanley Cup twice, but fell short of winning the trophy. This season, they lost to the Anaheim Ducks in the first-round playoffs by 4-2. 

Other Potential Bases Behind Kris Knoblouch’s Firing

There are a few possible reasons why this decision was made. According to the Edmonton Journal analyst, Kris Knoblauch was removed because the team’s overall direction went in the wrong direction during the season.

Even though he had a clear plan of playing smart puck possession and solid defensive hockey, the Oilers were very inconsistent and never fully adapted to that system.

Another big reason was the pressure to win immediately. The Edmonton Oilers have a strong title window with stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, so there is no time to waste.

The management felt that the team was not improving enough under Knoblauch. Injuries, tiredness from long playoff runs, roster changes, and weak defense also made the problems worse.

There were also problems with lineup choices, coaching staff setup, and how players were used. The Edmonton Oilers depended too much on their top stars, while the other players did not perform well enough.
