Sean Durzi has admitted that he did not see this trade coming. The Utah Mammoth defenseman just found out this month that his team had dealt him to the New York Rangers. This comes just months after he scored as an overtime winner against the same franchise.

"It was a surprise," Durzi said as per NHL reporter Mollie Walker's X post on July 23. "It's a business at the end of the day. That's kind of how this works. I'm a passionate player; I put my heart and soul into every game, every single moment that I'm a part of. And maybe sometimes that makes you forget that it is a business."

January was heavy for Durzi. His grandfather, who never missed one of his games, passed away just before Christmas. When he beat the Rangers in overtime at Madison Square Garden, it became a moment he dedicated to his grandfather.

The Rangers acquired Durzi on July 1 as part of a package built around Vincent Trocheck. In exchange, Utah received Trocheck, while New York got Durzi, Cole Beaudoin, and a third-round pick in the 2027 draft.

"This isn't my first trade. I know how to react. I know how to deal with it. Initial shock, and then it's get to work," Durzi further said as per the X post. His words reflect the reality of being an NHL player. This is his third trade in three offseasons after the previous trades sent him from Los Angeles to Arizona in 2023 and from Arizona to Utah in 2024.

But instead of dwelling on the sudden news, Durzi took it as a challenge.

"I'm a big believer in proving those who believe in you right, and I think having the opportunity to prove this staff with the Rangers right is exciting for me," he said.  "That's kind of a little bit of a kick of motivation in the middle of a long, grinding summer, and I can't wait. It's a lot of excitement. I'm going to give everything I have."

Having played 302 games thus far in his five-year career, Durzi will now represent the Rangers as his fourth team in the NHL.

Durzi starts settling in with the Rangers

Durzi is not going to be adjusting in the new franchise all alone. The Rangers also acquired defenseman Marcus Pettersson from Vancouver on July 1.

Both sides expect them to form New York's second defense by pairing them behind Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov.

According to the NHL, Durzi and Pettersson got in contact through Durzi's agent, who was with Pettersson at a wedding earlier this month. That small talk gave both players a head start before their training camp begins in September.

Durzi scored 27 points in 60 games with Utah last season, while Pettersson posted 18 points in 82 games with the Canucks. 

Both players are now set to support New York's rebuilt roster after the Rangers missed the playoffs the past two seasons.
