Comebacks are memorable, and even more so if they are achieved against all odds. The San Jose Sharks overcame a historic hurdle against the Pittsburgh Penguins exactly six months to this day.
Led by young superstar center Macklin Celebrini, the team delivered a 6-5 overtime win at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Sharks' official X account posted an edit of the game on June 13, prompting fans to reminisce about the victory.
The Sharks pulled it off after finding themselves 5-1 down with just over 14 minutes remaining on the clock in the third period.
It was a game of two distinct realities. The Sharks took an early 1-0 lead in the first period at 10:27 with Tyler Toffoli’s goal.
Their joy was short-lived, as veteran center Sidney Crosby leveled the game at 13:41 of the first period.
Pittsburgh then erupted for four unanswered goals in the next 30 minutes, with McGroarty, Hayes, Rust, and Mantha scoring.
Facing a 5-1 demolition, it all seemed over for the Sharks.
A ray of hope emerged when John Klingberg scored at 7:33 of the third period to reduce the deficit. William Eklund added another at 14:19 to bring the visitors back into the game.
That's when Celebrini seized the moment.
He scored at 17:33 of the third period before assisting Toffoli to level the game. With both teams stumbling into overtime, Klingberg scored the winner at 2:57 with yet another Celebrini assist to seal the victory.
“It just shows you’re never out of a game,” Celebrini reflected on the win, per NHL.com.
The Sharks entered the history books, mounting the fifth-latest four-goal comeback win in the NHL.
Celebrini's Clutch Performance Stole the Show
Suffice to say, Sharks fans will remember the momentous win for the foreseeable future. Reflecting on the game, they shared a myriad of comments on the X post.
“If you blinked, you missed the whole movie. Guess the Sharks just decided to rewrite the script,” said one fan while recalling the performance.
Another fan wrote, “This game changed my life in ways nobody will ever understand.”
Notably, the Penguins weren't in sparkling form before this game. The team had blown a third-period lead in three of its four straight losses.
“I was on a cruise and only got score updates, but the second I saw it was 5-2, I knew we were winning,” a Sharks supporter wrote.
Celebrini's one-goal and two-assist performance underscored his dominance in the comeback effort.
“A win powered by friendship and the rage of Macklin Celebrini, and it was one for the ages,” a user wrote.
The topline center had a standout season, playing all 82 games and amassing 115 points. His tally accounted for 46% of the San Jose Sharks' total points in the season, emphasizing his importance.
“It’s also idk Macklin’s birthday. Just saying,” remarked a fan.
Whether or not it's a coincidence, the post was shared on the 20-year-old's birthday, June 13.
