Toronto is heading into an important offseason. After another early playoff exit, the front office is working on reshaping the roster, with a defensive stalwart emerging as an option.
Veteran defenseman Morgan Rielly is reportedly under the crosshairs. He is the longest-tenured Maple Leaf, and his future with the club is being openly discussed.
According to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, Toronto GM John Chayka is actively looking for options. As for Rielly, the Pittsburgh Penguins have emerged as a potential destination.
"The way it's been told to me is that Toronto is looking into things, Rielly is aware of it, and that he will be presented with a few options if they arise," Kypreos said.

The 32-year-old has spent his entire 13-year career with the Maple Leafs. He is signed through 2029-30 on an eight-year contract of $60 million, carrying a $7.5 million AAV.
Kypreos finished the 2025-26 season with a career-worst -18 plus-minus rating. This has only fueled the trade speculation. Despite providing offensive threat and veteran leadership, Toronto's new front office appears open to exploring a change.
“Rielly still has no-movement protection for the next two years, but the belief is that wouldn't be a major hurdle to overcome," Kypreos added.
Another NHL insider, Ryan Dixon, has connected the Penguins to Rielly. According to him, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas will aim to solidify his team's defense, and his connection with Rielly might prove fruitful.
Notably, Dubas managed the Leafs when Rielly signed his current contract in 2021. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh made a surprise playoff appearance this year and only has two veteran defensemen tied beyond next season.
In this scenario, Rielly could help safeguard the team for the coming years.
"You could see where Rielly might serve as a bridge of sorts between the current blueline corps and the one Dubas is trying to build for the future," Dixon said, as per Sportsnet.
Rielly's departure could spark the Maple Leafs' squad rebuild and serve as a platform for a future overhaul at Pittsburgh. However, it will depend on whether he will waive his no-movement clause.
Why Pittsburgh Needs This Kind of Change
The Penguins exceeded everyone’s expectations this season by returning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Their run ended after a hard-fought first-round loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime of Game 6.
Defenseman Kris Letang, who turns 39 this season, is still under contract through 2027-28. Meanwhile, his backline partner Erik Karlsson is entering the final year of his contract at $10 million AAV. That puts Pittsburgh at risk with its blue line in the coming days.
This kind of gap is where Rielly could thrive, as his four-year deal would cover Karlsson's potential exit.
Although his underwhelming defensive numbers and current deal can be roadblocks, the Penguins have some room. As per Puckpedia, the franchise will have over $37 million in salary cap space this summer. That financial flexibility is enough to level up the roster.
Do you think the trade will happen? Will it help Pittsburgh lead its next rebuild? Let us know in the comments.
