Team Canada Bolsters Coaching Staff Ahead of 2026 IIHF World Championship

Team Canada has strengthened its coaching and support staff as it prepares for the upcoming 2026 IIHF World Championship. Before the tournament, they hired individuals for various roles.

As per the report by NHL.com, they hired Spencer Carbery, the head coach of the Washington Capitals. It is also learned from the same report that the team has appointed Capitals’ goaltending coach Scott Murray as a goaltending consultant.

Spencer Carbery has just completed his third season as head coach of the Washington Capitals. He comes from Victoria and has a 134-83-29 record. 60.4 points in three seasons with Washington. The 44-year-old won the 2025 Jack Adams Award. He is the only coach to win Coach of the Year in the NHL, AHL, and ECHL.

This season, the Washington Capitals finished with a 43-30-9 record and 95 points under him. On the other hand, Scott Murray has completed nine seasons as the Capitals’ goaltending coach in 2025–26. He has worked with goalies Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren in the last two seasons.

This past season, Thompson recorded a career-best 2.44 goals-against average and won 30 games again. The Capitals ranked sixth in the NHL in five-on-five save percentage.

These numbers and achievements show that Team Canada made the right decision by choosing them. Along with these two, Team Canada has also brought in one more individual. Let’s take a look.

Team Canada Brings a New Video Coach for the 2026 IIHF World Championship

Apart from Carbery and Murray, Team Canada added a new video coach, Elliott Mondou, to the coaching staff. Before this, Alexandre Mondou joined the St. Louis Blues as a video coordinator in 2022. He became a video coach in 2025.

He helped Hockey Canada win a silver medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics. In 2025, he was also part of the winning team at the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off. He earlier represented Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics and helped the team win gold at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Before joining the Blues, he worked full-time as Hockey Canada’s video coach, focusing on video analysis and advanced stats. So he has loads of experience in this role and can help Team Canada bring new insights during the marquee tournament.

By combining experienced NHL coaches with skilled analysts, Team Canada is clearly focused on building a well-rounded staff. With this strong coaching lineup in place, Team Canada aims to compete at the highest level and challenge for the gold medal at the 2026 IIHF World Championship.

The 2026 World Championship is set to take place from May 15 to 31 in Zurich and Fribourg.
