During the 2026 IIHF World Championship quarterfinal between Team USA and Canada, defenseman Ryan Lindgren became the center of controversy after a heavy first-period hit on Evan Bouchard.

The incident happened just 6:12 into the game. Team Canada’s Bouchard skated into the offensive zone at high speed, and Lindgren stepped up at the blue line and made a strong open-ice check.

However, the replay showed that most of the contact was to the head. Evan Bouchard fell hard to the ice and stayed down for a short time before leaving the game. Officials reviewed the hit and gave Ryan Lindgren a 5-minute major for an illegal hit to the head and a game misconduct. He was removed from the match.

The penalty changed the momentum in an important knockout game. Ryan Lindgren is usually a physical but clean defender, but IIHF rules on head contact led to a strict penalty even without intent.

One of the fans strongly criticized the hit, highlighting concern over player safety and the visible impact of the collision.

“The people in the comments trying to say this is a bad call meanwhile bouchard was literally unconscious, are you insane.”

The other fan said people judge physical hits differently depending on which team they support, showing possible bias in how the play is seen.

Some fans disagreed with the punishment. One said that players often get hit in the head, and fights in hockey also include head punches, so the penalty feels too strict.
