Team Canada is heading into the IIHF World Hockey Championship with a fresh wave of excitement, led by San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini. He will be joined by seasoned center and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

The duo has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the tournament, as Canada aims to reclaim gold by blending elite prospects with established veterans.

At 19 years old, Celebrini will become the youngest-ever captain in Canadian national team history and the youngest in their roster for the World Championship. His captaincy doesn't come without merit either, as Celebrini had a standout campaign with the San Jose Sharks.

In his second NHL season, he scored 115 points, including 45 goals, in 82 games. Celebrini also set a new points record in a single season for the Sharks, surpassing Joe Thornton's feat of 114 points. Only Crosby and Gretzky reached 50 points faster as teenagers.

The youngster was also a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, which is presented to the most outstanding player in the NHL, as voted by the players.

On the collective front, however, Celebrini may have some regrets. The Sharks finished fifth in the division and missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year.

Besides contributing with his numbers, Celebrini also serves as the team's alternate captain. A role that may inform his leadership with Team Canada.

And he will have a pair of wise eyes looking over him.

Three-time Stanley Cup winner Sidney Crosby will bring ample amounts of experience and wisdom to the squad. Known as Sid the Kid, the 38-year-old is no stranger to teenage stardom and responsibilities.

An Olympic and World champion, Crosby knows what it takes to win on the international stage. He belongs to the iconic Triple Club, featuring players who have won the Olympic Gold, World Championship, and the Stanley Cup.

The 2026 World Championships will also mark Crosby's fourth appearance at the tournament.

With Celebrini and co. seeking international glory and banishing the memory of their Olympic defeat last year, Crosby's seasoned insight will prove vital.

Macklin Celebrini's Mission: Lead Canada’s Charge For Gold

Having gained the armband, Celebrini is tasked with powering Team Canada to the gold medal. Their last win came at the 2023 World Championships, and it's been a barren stretch since.

Last year's World Championship was a heartbreaker, as Canada succumbed to a shock 2-1 defeat to Denmark in the quarterfinal.

As the most successful team in World Championships history with 28 titles, Canada tends to enter as the tournament favourite. But standing in its way are familiar foes, Team USA, who won the title after 92 years.

The two have already clashed heads, having met in the final at this year's Milan Cortina Olympics. Team USA clinched gold after beating Canada 2-1.

Celebrini and his team are in a group with Sweden, Czechia, Denmark, Slovakia, Norway, Slovenia, and Italy. With the final game set for May 31, Team Canada will look to weave its path to a 29th triumph.
