Every NHL team starts training camp to win the Stanley Cup. But not every team faces the same pressure. Some teams are still building for the future, while others already have strong rosters that can compete for a championship now.
For those top contenders, making the playoffs is not enough. Fans, the media, and owners expect long playoff runs and a chance to win the Cup. A season often feels successful only if a team takes advantage of its limited time to compete for a championship.
Why These Three Teams Face the Most Pressure
Here are the three teams entering the 2026-27 season with huge pressure.
Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers are clearly in win-now mode. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are among the best players in the NHL, and the team has built its roster to compete for the Stanley Cup.
Reaching the Stanley Cup Final again would be a big achievement, but it would not fully meet expectations. The Oilers now expect to win the championship, and anything less will lead to questions about whether the team has given enough support to its star players.
According to a report by Chris Pownall of Yardbarker, each season without a Stanley Cup brings more pressure and more attention to one of the NHL's most talented teams.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs made a major change this offseason by parting ways with Mitch Marner. The move showed that strong regular-season results were not enough because the team still did not achieve the playoff success it wanted.
Toronto also missed the playoffs for the first time in nine years, so the next season is very important. If the new roster performs well, management can say the change was needed. If the team struggles, the pressure will grow because the organization has already made a big change.
For a team that often faces questions about its playoff record, another early playoff exit would be very hard to explain.
Dallas Stars
Dallas may not get as much attention as Edmonton or Toronto, but the pressure is just as strong. The Stars have been one of the NHL's most consistent teams and have reached the playoffs in each of the last five seasons.
With players like Jason Robertson, a deep group of scorers, and Jake Oettinger in goal, the roster has very few clear weaknesses. Dallas has reached the point where being called a contender is no longer enough. The team now needs to turn its regular success into a Stanley Cup championship.
The NHL can be unpredictable. Injuries, great goaltending, or one lucky bounce can change a playoff series. But not every team faces the same expectations.
For the Oilers, Maple Leafs, and Stars, success will not be judged by simply making the playoffs or winning one or two rounds. The goal is to win the Stanley Cup in June 2027.
If they fall short, each team will face tough questions about what it needs to change next.
What do you think? What must Edmonton, Toronto, and Dallas do to finally win the Stanley Cup? Let us know in the comments.
