A month after saying he was "fully committed" to the Ottawa Senators in April, Brady Tkachuk is getting ready to start a new chapter with the Florida Panthers. The trade surprised many NHL fans because Brady had publicly supported Ottawa less than two months earlier.

Brady recently explained his decision during his first press conference with the Panthers. In a video shared by Sportsnet on their X, the 26-year-old said he chose to move because he wanted a new opportunity and a fresh start, not because of one specific problem.

“I think there's definitely a lot of different things that have happened throughout my time there," said Brady in June 23. "And for me, I think it was just time for the next chapter, and something that it wasn't an easy decision.”

He did not criticize the Senators. Instead, he said it was difficult to leave the team that drafted him fourth overall in 2018 and later made him captain.

Brady also spoke about how much the Senators helped him grow as both a player and a person.

"It's very thankful for what they've done for me," he said. "And not just as a player, but molding me into the human that I am today. And that's something I could carry into the future.”

After eight seasons, he wanted a new chapter. He leaves Ottawa with 463 points, 213 goals, and a strong legacy as the much-awaited reunion finally came true.

A report by NHL.com also showed what awaits Brady in Florida. The Panthers acquired him from the Senators for the No. 9 and No. 25 picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, a conditional first-round pick in 2029, and a 2027 second-round pick.

One of the biggest stories from the trade is that Brady will finally play with his brother, Matthew Tkachuk, in the NHL. The brothers previously played together for Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Winter Olympics, where they helped win a gold medal, the first time since 1980.

Brady also said Florida’s winning culture was a big reason he wanted to join the Panthers.

“It's probably the closest group in the League," he said. "It's just everybody's always doing stuff together. Everything's done by committee, and everybody's a part of the puzzle.”

Florida general manager Bill Zito agreed with that view. He said Brady is a great fit because of his playing style, personality, and connection to the organization through his brother.

The trade gives the Panthers another strong power forward. Brady recorded 59 points in 60 games last season.
