In a major decision in his young hockey career, Carter Meyer has requested to part ways with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, also called the USNTDP.
The American-born forward, who is also eligible to play for Canada, has been considered as one of the top prospects for the NHL Draft next year.
Canadian personality and host of The Sheet podcast, Jeff Marek, took to his X account to share details about the 17-year-old's latest career choice.
“Top '27 NHL draft prospect Carter Meyer has requested a release from the USNTDP and informed USA Hockey that he won’t return,” he wrote.
Marek also revealed that Meyer, who is committed to joining Boston University, has his Canadian Hockey League (CHL) rights held by the Quebec Remparts. His older brother, Freddy Meyer, 18, plays for the Remparts in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) under the CHL development system.
Their father, Freddy Meyer Sr., played in the NHL for four different teams from 2003 to 2011. Meyer Sr. also had his hockey career take shape with the USNTDP during his early days in the sport.
With Carter Meyer becoming an integral part of the USNTDP over the past year or so, they are now the first father-son duo to play in the prestigious development program.
USA Hockey has yet to grant Meyer his release from the NTDP. Official confirmation is expected soon, allowing Meyer to finalize his next move.
Carter Meyer’s career trajectory with USNTDP in the past year
In April 2025, Carter Meyer was among the 23 hockey players selected to join the USNTDP for the 2025-26 season.
He went on to represent both the U.S. National U17 and U18 teams in two different leagues during the same NTDP season.
After scoring 45 points (18G / 27A) in 41 games for the U17 team in the league, Meyer was moved up to the U18 team. Following his ascension, he ended up accumulating 25 points (11G/14A) in 29 games in the league.
The Winchester, MA native also played for the USNTDP Juniors team in the United States Hockey League (USHL), accruing a total of 37 points (15 goals and 22 assists) in 42 games.
Meyer won a bronze medal for the US U17 in the World Hockey Challenge (WHC) after making a telling contribution of 10 points (4G/6A) in just four games.
After that, he represented the US U18 in the IIHF World Junior Championship, in which he scored five points (1G/4A). He won the 2026 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament in Switzerland.
