The Toronto Maple Leafs have made one of the biggest moves of the NHL offseason by acquiring defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a sign-and-trade deal.
According to reports, Toronto sent a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to Tampa Bay for Raddysh. After the trade, Darren Raddysh signed an eight-year contract worth $68 million, carrying an average annual value of $8.5 million.
The move shows that the Toronto Maple Leafs are serious about strengthening their defense. Raddysh is a proven two-way defenseman coming off the best season of his career.
In 2025–26, he scored a career-high 22 goals and recorded 70 points in 73 regular-season games while averaging 22:42 of ice time per game. He also added two points in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.
His peak form is something the Toronto franchise would be excited about.
General manager John Chayka shared his excitement after completing the trade.
“We are thrilled to add a defenceman of Darren’s caliber to our organization,” Chayka said in a statement.
John Chayka praised Darren Raddysh as an elite two-way defenseman. He highlighted Raddysh’s puck-moving ability, calm play, and effectiveness in all areas of the ice, calling him a major addition to the team.
“Darren has emerged as one of the NHL’s premier two-way defencemen, combining elite puck-moving ability with poise, competitiveness, and strong play in all three zones. He strengthens our blue line in every situation and is exactly the type of player we want helping lead this team.”
The trade also brings a hometown player back to Toronto during the best years of his career.
The 30-year-old defenseman was expected to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but the Toronto Maple Leafs acted quickly to sign him before he reached the open market.
Darren Raddysh Leaves Lasting Legacy in Tampa Bay
While the Toronto Maple Leafs celebrate adding a top defenseman, the Tampa Bay Lightning lose one of their key blue-liners.
General manager Julien BriseBois said Tampa Bay received a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft for the pending unrestricted free agent.
Darren Raddysh finished his time in Tampa Bay with 35 goals and 143 points in 249 NHL games, all with the Lightning. He also became only the second defenseman in franchise history to record a 70-point season, joining Victor Hedman, who achieved the milestone three times.
Darren Raddysh did not take the usual path to the NHL. He went undrafted and signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2018. The Blackhawks later traded him to the New York Rangers organization in 2019.
In July 2021, he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent and worked his way through the organization.
In 2023, he earned AHL First All-Star Team honors and later became a full-time NHL defenseman.
Now, the Toronto Maple Leafs are counting on him to help strengthen their push for a Stanley Cup championship during the best years of his career.
