An eight-year era for the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end. The team is officially out of Stanley Cup contention after a decisive 4-1 loss against the San Jose Sharks sealed their fate.
On Thursday, April 02, 2026, the Toronto Maple Leafs locked horns with the San Jose Sharks. With the Sharks winning the game, the Leafs can't reach the playoffs even if they win their remaining games.
It is the first time since 2016 that the Maple Leafs will not reach the playoffs. The Maple Leafs last missed the playoffs in the 2015–16 season. Then they began an impressive nine-postseason streak that defined their modern era.
Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner were among several star players providing individual accomplishments in this past season. However, with Marner's departure and defensive woes, the Toronto Maple Leafs struggled.
In fact, the loss came in the wake of another departure. The Leafs' general manager, Brad Treliving, who led the team for three full seasons, was fired just three days before this loss.
What Happened in the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. San Jose Sharks Game?
The Sharks were all over the Leafs right from the beginning. Zack Ostapchuk from the Sharks scored the first goal of the game at 03:27 in the first period. They continued their dominance and at one stage, were leading 3-0.
John Tavares scored a goal for the Leafs at 06:43 in the second period, but that was the only goal the team managed in that game. Adam Gaudette scored another goal for the Sharks, and eventually, the Sharks won the game 4-1.
The Leafs are at No. 9 with 77 points in the Wild Card (Eastern) standings. They will now play their next game against the Florida Panthers on April 04, 2026.
Looking ahead, management decisions during the offseason will be crucial. Do you think the Leafs can bounce back next season? Tell us in the comments.
