The Vegas Golden Knights took a moment to honor a hometown hero on Sunday night. Before Game 3 of the Western Conference Final, the team paid tribute to NASCAR legend Kyle Busch at T-Mobile Arena. The Las Vegas native passed away on Thursday at the age of 41.
The arena went silent before puck drop. Fans, players, and coaches all stopped to remember the racing icon.
"Ladies and gentlemen, earlier this week, the Las Vegas community lost an icon," said Golden Knights PA announcer Bruce Cusick. "Kyle Busch was known for his passion, intensity and love for racing."
Cusick continued with words that hit home for many in the building. Busch's bond with the city ran deep.
"Kyle's impact on motorsports, the Las Vegas community and the fans who followed him will never be forgotten," he said.
The Golden Knights had already shared their grief earlier in the week. After news of his death broke, the team posted a heartfelt message on social media. They included a photo of Busch posing with Chance, the team's mascot.
"We are heartbroken to hear of Kyle's passing," the team wrote. "Our deepest condolences to the Busch family and all those that knew him. We will miss you in Vegas."
The tribute was simple but powerful. For a city that loved him, it was the right way to say goodbye.
Carolina Hurricanes Honored Kyle Busch Before Game 1
The Golden Knights weren't the only NHL team to honor Busch. The Carolina Hurricanes also paid their respects earlier in the week. Their tribute came before Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final on Thursday night.
The game was played at Lenovo Center in Raleigh. The Hurricanes were hosting the Montreal Canadiens. But before the action started, the focus shifted to Busch.
The team held a formal moment of silence at center ice. The crowd fell quiet as fans bowed their heads to honor the racing legend.
A photo and commemorative graphic of Busch lit up the Jumbotron. The PA announcer also read a short dedication. It highlighted his massive legacy in the world of motorsports.
It was a moment that crossed sports lines. Hockey and NASCAR fans came together to mourn one man. Two very different worlds, united in grief.
