While the former Columbus Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner changed rosters, there came his honest admission about being NHL icon Alex Ovechkin’s teammate.
“It’s going to be super special to be able to be on the same team as him,” the veteran admitted to Sportsnet recently. “Playing against him all these years, just happy to be on his side. Obviously, the best goal scorer of all-time.”
During his 13-season tenure with the Blue Jackets, Jenner encountered the Washington Capitals captain several times. But this time, his latest four-year, $23M contract with the Capitals will allow him to share the ice with Ovi.

In the video, Jenner maintained nothing but sportsmanship and genuine admiration for the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer with 929 career goals under his name. Surely Jenner is eager to meet his new teammates, but the thrill of playing with Ovechkin surpasses it all.
“What he’s done for the game, one of the greatest players ever,” Jenner added in the same segment. “So, to get to experience that, I’m really looking forward to that and meeting the rest of the guys. But obviously, to play with a great like that is very exciting for myself.”
But this excitement would’ve faded in thin air had Ovi chose to retire. However, Jenner knew that wasn’t going to happen.
Boone Jenner Knew Alex Ovechkin Would Return
The 40-year-old’s decision to re-sign a one-year, $4.25M contract with the Capitals may have shocked many, but not Jenner. An incident during the Blue Jackets and Capitals' last game of the 2025-26 season affirmed that Ovi was going to come back.
“I had a good sense that he was gonna come back,” Jenner added to the same segment. “The last game of the last season against Washington, I saw him quickly after the game. And I just had a sense that he wasn’t done and he was gonna come back.”
“He kind of said, “Yeah, we’ll see you next year,” he added. “And it’s kind of funny that we’ll be teammates now.”
Ovi’s offensive prowess and presence don’t need an intro. This may be his 22nd NHL season, but Jenner knew that the Capitals captain is still as capable on the ice.
