An unusual moment happened during the Buffalo Sabres and the Detroit Red Wings game on March 27, 2026 (Friday). Because of that incident, Tage Thompson got injured. He also received the penalty for the same.
The incident occurred during a physical sequence along the boards when Simon Edvinsson attempted to disrupt Thompson’s control of the puck.
Edvinsson lifted Thompson’s stick in that process. It is a common defensive technique that is used to prevent a shot or pass.
That move proved costly for Tage Thompson, as his own stick struck him in the face. In the video, he could be seen being wounded in his mouth, and reports indicated that he chipped a couple of his teeth.
The incident quickly gained attention on social media. The clips of the incident are also circulating across platforms, sparking debate about responsibility in a high-sticking situation.
Tage Thompson Assessed Double-Minor Despite Suffering Injury
Officials immediately stopped play and reviewed the sequence. Following the review, Thompson was assessed a double-minor penalty for high-sticking, resulting in four minutes in the penalty box.
As per the rules, a standard minor penalty can be increased to a double minor when an injury, such as mouth wounds or dental damage, occurs.
After the incident, the game resumed. Earlier, the game started with the Wings’ Alex DeBrincat making the first hard move at 04:02. By the end of the first period, the Wings were 3-0 up.
The Sabres managed to score a goal in the second period, but the Wings continued the good work.
In the 3rd phase, the Wings scored two more goals and eventually won 5-2. John Gibson made 28 saves for the Detroit Red Wings.
The Red Wings are at No. 4 in the Wild Card table, with 86 points. The Buffalo Sabres, on the other hand, are still at the top of the Atlantic Division (Eastern) with 96 points. The Detroit Red Wings will now face the Philadelphia Flyers on March 28, 2026.
While the result impacted the standings, the high-sticking incident involving Thompson remained the defining storyline from the contest.
