Mike Babcock's candidacy for the Edmonton Oilers' head coaching role continues to draw scrutiny. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggested that the biggest hurdles standing in his way.
Talking about an ongoing investigation regarding Babcock, Friedman said that the players would support the move, but challenges are being led by the agents.
"Elliotte Friedman: Re Mike Babcock investigation/Oilers: I do think the players support the move, at least the ones who met with Babcock; I do think a lot of the challenges are being led by agents of players who are concerned - 32 Thoughts (6/12)," NHL Rumour Report wrote on its X account on Saturday.
The Oilers have shown interest in hiring Babcock as their coach, who has been away from head coaching duties since 2019.
He was appointed by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023, but before he could coach a single game with them, he resigned from the position. Reportedly, there were allegations made about the improper behavior of the coach, as he allegedly asked players to show their cell phones to him.
Now, as he is back on the scene for a coaching role, the NHLPA has requested the NHL to investigate the case. His potential return has created a massive discussion, with people sharing their views on whether the Oilers should hire him or not.
NHL Insider Hints Mike Babcock May Be Closer to Coaching Comeback
In a recent episode of his "The CJ Show" on Friday, NHL insider Chris Johnston said that he heard that the league is speaking to people close to the situation, and Babcock could be allowed to work.
"I've seen other reporting, but...I know people that were right there and kind of have more of a sense of exactly what happened...they think he's going to be allowed to work," he said (via HockeyPatrol).
The Oilers are in search of their new coach after firing Kris Knoblauch in May, searching for their tenth coach in 15 years. Babcock also holds immense coaching experience, but he has not been part of any NHL team since his last stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019.
