Montreal Canadiens fans are celebrating a Game 1 victory, but some are harassing the wrong Hurricanes. A case of mistaken identity on social media has left a WHL team caught in the playoff crossfire.

After their Game 1 win, some of the Canadiens fans went wild on social media, but instead of targeting the Hurricanes from Carolina, they mistakenly let their feelings known to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who compete in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

Lethbridge took to their official X account to share a post on the ever-developing situation, talking about how they are catching strays before asking their namesake and the Canadiens for help.

They also accompanied the post with a video, giving space in it to the abuses received from the Canadiens fans on the voice note after writing a letter to them.

In their letter addressed to the Montreal fans, Lethbridge wrote, “Dear Montreal Canadiens fans… we understand the confusion. After all, we are called the Hurricanes too. We’ve been seeing some very passionate DMs and comments during your playoff run, but just a quick reminder… we are the Lethbridge Hurricanes, not the Carolina Hurricanes.”

“That said, we’re enjoying the support (and the entertainment) from Habs Fans everywhere,” they concluded.

Lethbridge basically gave the entire situation a positive and somewhat hilarious spin rather than dragging it further, which can easily happen on social media.

For the Canadiens fans, this could be considered a wake-up call, not only to stay respectful to their actual opponents, Carolina, but also not to repeat the same mistake again.

Montreal Canadiens will play Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals Series vs. the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday

The Montreal Canadiens will be looking to extend their lead in the Eastern Conference Finals Series to 2-0 against the Carolina Hurricanes away from home on Saturday, May 23.

Following their comfortable win in Game 1 of the playoff series, the Canadiens will be confident of getting the better of the Hurricanes from Carolina once more at the Lenovo Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina.

When the Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis was posed a question about their incredible run on the road, especially in the playoffs, he responded, as per NHL website, “I don't think it's one thing.”

“I feel like it's probably a little confidence for how the season went for us on the road. I think we believe," he added. Notably, Montreal has a very impressive 7-2 record away in the playoffs after finishing the 2025-26 regular season with a 24-9-8 record for 56 points on the road.

It was the joint-second best record away from home in the regular season alongside the Dallas Stars, but five wins and seven points behind the Colorado Avalanche.
