The Buffalo Sabres may have a great chance to fix one of their biggest needs this summer, and Mathew Barzal of the New York Islanders could be the player for the job.

After winning the Atlantic Division and reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2011, the Sabres are now looking to take the next step.

Mathew Barzal is an attractive option because of his offensive ability. The New York Islanders center posted 72 points in 81 games this season.

His 53 assists rank 10th among centers in the league and above Buffalo's Tage Thompson and Ryan McLeod.

The Sabres' center depth remains a weakness despite playoff success. The team has a lot of offensive talent, but adding another top-six center would ensure support for its core players.

The 29-year-old has been hailed for his playmaking throughout his career.

If they acquire Barzal, he could fit well on the top line with Thompson and winger Zach Benson. He is currently on an eight-year contract worth $73.2 million, bringing a $9.15 million salary cap hit.

Additionally, he has a 22-team modified trade clause, which could prove a hurdle in any potential trade. The Islanders' new GM, Mathieu Darche, is reportedly examining his roster, but moving the team's offensive engine seems unwise.

But for a Buffalo team trying to build on its strong season, adding a proven star center could be worth the investment.

Barzal's Proven Track Record Adds to His Appeal

Barzal’s strong 2025-26 season is only part of the reason why he would be great for the Buffalo Sabres.

He quickly became one of the team’s most important players after making his NHL debut in 2016.

The center had a breakout season in 2017-18, finishing with 85 points and 63 assists. He led the Islanders in both categories and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie.

Throughout his career, he has shown excellent vision, strong puck skills, and the ability to create scoring chances in various situations.

And if NHL insider Bruce Garrioch is to be believed, the Islanders may consider an offer for their star center.

“A league executive told The Citizen that the New York Islanders are exploring the market for forward Mathew Barzal," he stated, per Ottawa Citizen. 

With Buffalo's projected salary cap of $11.9 million, the franchise may have to move some pieces to make an offer. But Barzal has many of the qualities the team should look for to stay among the NHL’s top contenders heading into the 2026-27 season.
